Online Gathering on
Self-RememberingJoin us for a 3-day online presentation introducing the tool of self-remembering…
January 3, 4 & 5
Self-remembering is the cornerstone of this teaching, a practical method for elevating consciousness that can be applied in any circumstance. While simple to understand, this practice challenges our habitual ways of being and necessitates an entire system of ideas and methods to support it. During this three-day gathering, we will explore both the theoretical foundation and practical application of self-remembering, while examining the internal resistance that naturally arises when we attempt this work.
Self-remembering is the beginning and the center of the system and the most important thing to understand.
Day 1: Self-Remembering: The Fundamental Effort
Gurdjieff explained that self-remembering occurs when we become aware not only of our actions but of ourselves performing them—when we perceive both the ‘I’ and the ‘here’ of ‘I am here.’ This heightened state of awareness is accessible in any circumstance, making it unique among spiritual practices. Most methods require specific conditions: a quiet environment, a particular posture, isolation from others, or special breathing techniques. But we can remember ourselves while reading, typing, eating, walking, talking or listening.
We will explore how this practice is presented in Esoteric Christianity and experiment with practical exercises that demonstrate its accessibility. Through group work, we will practice introducing moments of self-remembering into various activities. Participants will join a dedicated teamwork platform where they can share observations and receive prompts or reminders to help their practice throughout the day.

Day 2: Anchoring Self-Remembering in Daily Life
Although self-remembering is accessible at each moment, we are not accustomed to weaving this effort throughout our daily activities. We are accustomed to performing our daily tasks on autopilot, with as little investment of attention as possible. From the moment we step out of bed in the morning to the time we retire at night, we move through our routines automatically, absorbed in random impulses and associative thinking. Yet these very activities—washing, dressing, eating, working—present the best opportunities for the practice of being aware of ourselves because they fill the vast majority of our time.
Self-remembering has degrees. We will formulate three broad degrees of proximity or distance from self-awareness, and explore this division with lessons from Esoteric Christianity. The day will conclude with the WHERE ARE YOU? exercise: participants will receive randomly-timed reminders throughout the day to examine their state and record their degree of self-awareness.
If self-remembering were easy and if results came more quickly it could not have the importance which it has.
Day 3: Understanding Internal Resistance
Being unaccustomed to self-remembering is one challenge; harboring active internal resistance to it is another. On this final day, we will examine how this resistance manifests and why it arises. Through group discussion and practical exercises, participants will learn to recognize and work with their resistance rather than against it. We will study how this struggle was portrayed in Esoteric Christianity and outline practical approaches for establishing a more permanent practice of self-remembering.
